We might find ourselves stuck in performance mode, just functioning and ticking off tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"654\">As a result, our composure slips away. And when disruptions happen, they don\u2019t fit into our plan \u2013 we\u2019re <em data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"593\">not amused<\/em>, or even get upset. But life rarely goes exactly as planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"873\">Disruptions are part of life. Just think back to the start of the corona crisis: suddenly we were working from home \u2013 maybe even from our child\u2019s bedroom in the beginning \u2013 doing yoga online, and adjusting on the fly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1136\">Here are two powerful examples of the <em data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"923\">Yes, and<\/em> principle for finding your composure, which I\u2019ll explain in more detail below: <strong data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1056\">\u201cYes, and I\u2019ll make the best of the situation.\u201d <\/strong>A mindset that\u2019s solution-oriented \u2013 without switching off critical thinking.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><strong>The Yes, and principle \u2013 2 powerful examples (videos)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Professor Robert Kelly, an expert on South Korea, was being interviewed live by the BBC when his children came crashing in. First his dancing daughter and then her baby brother hot on her heels in his baby walker. Their father managed to ignore the chaos behind him when his wife rushed into the room to remove the agitated children. At first, he seemed a bit stressed but then he took it with humour, like the BBC interviewer.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><a style=\"color: #4785b5;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IKxqy9SJ-0I\">video<\/a> <\/span>went viral and people loved it. Rightly so, it is hilarious and a great example of poise. I\u2019m sure that the situation wasn\u2019t easy for Professor Kelly and presumably he used the \u201cYes, and principle\u201d rather unconsciously.<\/p>\n<p>Another example for composure is a\u00a0 Professor from Israel. He was giving a lecture when the baby of a student began to cry. The mother was preparing to leave with her child when Professor Engelberg picked up the baby and continued on with his lecture, holding the baby: <span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><a style=\"color: #4785b5;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wNUqm-OgdPM\"><span style=\"color: #4785b5;\">Video<\/span> <\/a><\/span>\u2013 Very powerful!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><strong>Composure at the push of a button? Sorry, that\u2019s unrealistic<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Again and again, in situations we can\u2019t change, we often lack the laid-back behaviour we would wish for. E.g. in online meetings, the technique isn\u2019t working. Thoughts like: \u201c<em>I could do more important things in the meantime!\u201d<\/em> or even <em>\u201cThat sucks!\u201d<\/em> are coming up.<\/p>\n<p>Or, that\u2019s now a very German thing: a long queue in front of a checkout. <em>\u201cI can\u2019t believe it, the other checkout is quicker than mine. And now they even page a colleague to come over. So annoying!! I have more important things to do<\/em>!\u201d Or Your child rushing for the loo, just the minute you were to set off. You have a ferry to take!<\/p>\n<p>We get agitated and needless to say, we waste our energy. Most importantly, it will be more difficult to be laid-back in situations which are really important and that need our composure. Our physical <strong>bodies shape the way we think<\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><a style=\"color: #4785b5;\" href=\"https:\/\/bettina-bonkas.com\/en\/gelebte-resilienz.html\">embodiment<\/a><\/span>) and<\/li>\n<li>is a <strong>process<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0\u27a1\u00a0<span style=\"color: #4785b5;\">Inner attitude (mindset)<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If I tend to be a tense person, I\u2019m likely to lack composure in many areas of life \u2013 especially in situations that are important to me.<\/p>\n<p>So, how can I work on my inner attitude?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><strong>The Yes, and principle for finding your composure<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Yes, and principle is a pillar of improvisation \u2013 finding a solution creatively on the spot, without preparation. Accepting what is and weighing up the scope of my action.<\/p>\n<p>Below, I will introduce the &#8216;Yes and&#8217; principle using the following points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Yes, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span> &#8230;&#8221; instead of &#8220;Yes, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but<\/span> &#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Yes, and out of your comfort zone<\/li>\n<li>Yes, and mistakes happen. So: Say yes to mistakes. Still, at the end of one day I was thinking: <em>\u201cWell, I could have done better today.\u201d<\/em> and I was going to retreat as I\u2019d have done it in the past. That gives us a certain control and a perceived sense of security. The thing however is that we\u2019re becoming more and more anxious in areas that are out of our control.<\/p>\n<p>When I drove to England, for the first time driving myself, it was a super massive step for me to leave my comfort zone, especially after a car accident I\u2019d had a couple of years before. I was even close to panic attacks. I wrote about it in my blog entry <span style=\"color: #037c8c;\"><span style=\"color: #4785b5;\"><a style=\"color: #4785b5;\" href=\"https:\/\/bettina-bonkas.com\/en\/ziele-erreichen-lass-deine-ziele-realitaet-werden-jeder-schritt-zaehlt.html\">\u201cMaking your goals reality \u2013 every step counts\u201d<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. I share some tips there as well.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I\u2019d like to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone every now &amp; then<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Not with pressure \u2013 but with curiosity:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2192 What could you try that\u2019s new?<br data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"217\" \/>A new restaurant? When we accept both and learn from them instead of reacting negatively towards them, we can turn them into a positive learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>In a training course I attended we had to give short impromptu presentations about proverbs we had drawn from a pile. Three rounds. The first two rounds went well, then I got stuck with the last proverb: \u201cAll good things come in threes.\u201d I somehow had no idea what to say.<\/p>\n<p>I thought:<em> \u201cNo idea, really \u2013 I\u2019m totally blank at the moment.\u201d<\/em> So, I talked about the shape of the number three and just got carried away, completely off topic. We all had fun in our group (One of my fellow players was a mathematician. \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed the feeling of failing and having fun to do so. It feels so good and liberating not to take life too seriously. Not taking things too seriously. That\u2019s also what I like about the video with Professor Kelly. They take it with humour. What else could they do?<\/p>\n<p>In an improv session, we were doing storytelling, Ella, our game leader, brought me into the game. I had to play another player\u2019s wife: That was the easy part.<\/p>\n<p>But then came the twist: In my role, I was an expert for dolphins. I was to show the differences between Scottish and German dolphins by demonstrating it.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was: <em>\u201cWhat the hell is Ella asking of me? Honestly?! How can I do this?\u201d<\/em> But then I thought: <em>\u201cWho cares? Nothing to lose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think, had the dolphins listened to me, they would have been disturbed. We had lots of fun in our session. Make sure, you find a balance on a physical level, e.g.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dancing<\/li>\n<li>Exercises for your shoulder and neck<\/li>\n<li>Walking<\/li>\n<li>Moving in general<\/li>\n<li>Making faces (+ good mood on top)<\/li>\n<li>Shaking stress off. That\u2019s what I do regularly, especially after being very focused at work. Shake off the stress. I also share how I successfully treated a shoulder bursitis on my own using this approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I practise this regularly myself as insecurity and anxiety leave you with a feeling of restriction and they block your thinking opposed to open poses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watch your breathing: I make sure that my feet are grounded and I breathe deeply in through my nose, I hold my breath a short time and I breathe out through my mouth. Breathing out is longer than breathing in.<\/li>\n<li>Invite lightness &amp; joy into your life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0\u27a1\u00a0<span style=\"color: #4785b5;\">A question of training<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The \u201eYes, and\u201d-principle for finding your composure is also a question of training like the playing of an instrument, doings sports or speaking another language. We often only see the results when people seem to master things effortlessly. But the efforts behind it are unveiled to us.<\/p>\n<p>I apply what I\u2019ve written above regularly. Some of it comes naturally, some of it I had to learn or to recall from former times. When you feel the positive effect, it won\u2019t feel like a must anymore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Look for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2192 opportunities. You may be confronting beliefs that have shaped your thinking for decades \u2013 things like <em>\u201cI shouldn\u2019t make any mistakes.\u201d \u201cI must perform!\u201d \u201cI have to meet other people\u2019s expectations!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"632\">Letting go of these patterns is rarely immediate. However limiting they may be, they\u2019ve often been part of our inner world for many years. Shifting them is a gradual process \u2013 one that calls for time, patience and a good deal of kindness towards yourself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"632\">Not every belief is entirely negative. The ones mentioned above can drive good performance and have their benefits. As with most things, it all comes down to finding a healthy balance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Words of encouragement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2192\u00a0 Look for people who care about you and who will support you on your way.<br \/>\n\u2192\u00a0 Support yourself by treating yourself how you would treat others.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>I<span style=\"color: #4785b5;\">n a nutshell: The Yes, and principle for finding your composure<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We can\u2019t ban stress &amp; strain out of our lives, that\u2019s unrealistic.
