In a world that constantly competes for our attention, this is a widespread phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"714\"><strong data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"562\">Focus and inner calm amid digital overload<\/strong>\u2013 that\u2019s exactly what this article is about. She keeps seeing a man who\u2019s always glued to his phone \u2013 ignoring his dog. One day she spotted a completely moldy piece of bread on the field. She managed to pick up part of it. Later she saw that same dog eating it \u2013 while his owner was staring at the screen. But neurologist and author <strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1286\">Dr Faye Begeti<\/strong> sees it differently \u2013 and offers an interesting shift in perspective:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1356\"><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not so much that we&#8217;re less able to concentrate &#8211; in fact, we score higher in cognitive and IQ tests. The catch? We&#8217;re focusing our attention more and more on the wrong things.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1723\">Clinical psychologist and author <strong data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1599\">Dr Kirren Schnack<\/strong> also finds in her work with patients that they switch tasks more quickly and spend less time focusing on a single activity:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1723\"><em>&#8220;Rapid Attention Switching&#8221; &#8211; constantly jumping from one thing to the next &#8211; drains our mental energy over time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"2006\">So while we\u2019ve become better at switching between tasks, our endurance to stick with one task has weakened \u2013 especially when there\u2019s no instant reward involved.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2210\">That\u2019s part of the problem: we live in a society where instant gratification has become the norm. And that encourages distraction \u2013 especially when the reward comes, as it so often does, from our phone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2210\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s perfectly normal to focus on things that bring us joy or promise a quick reward \u2013 and that\u2019s why picking up the phone is so tempting.\u201d \u2013 Dr Schnack<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2373\" data-end=\"2497\">But this has consequences: it becomes increasingly difficult to stay focused on things that feel, by comparison, a bit dull.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2549\"><span style=\"color: #086a87;\">Sensory Overload \u2013 What Does It Do to Us?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2657\">Constant sensory input puts stress on the brain \u2013 it switches to <strong data-start=\"2616\" data-end=\"2635\">\u201csurvival mode\u201d<\/strong>. This can show up as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2661\" data-end=\"2681\">inner restlessness<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2684\" data-end=\"2715\">a vague feeling of exhaustion<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2718\" data-end=\"2764\">difficulty concentrating or thinking clearly<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2812\">the sense of constantly \u201cchasing\u201d something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2846\"><strong data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2827\">Dr Begeti<\/strong> puts it like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cOur brain gets tired and goes into low battery mode. Our attention span drops, we feel drained \u2013 and often more irritable too.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3201\">In this state, we\u2019re particularly vulnerable to distraction \u2013 and that can turn into a vicious cycle. We feel endlessly busy but don\u2019t really make progress. It tends to become unstable particularly when we\u2019re stressed \u2013 or when we\u2019re exposed to too many emotions from external sources.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"245\" data-end=\"503\">One contributing factor: our sources of information. Social media platforms are designed to keep us engaged for as long as possible. We scroll through endless content, absorbing opinions, images, and emotions. \u201cEmotions sell\u201d \u2013 and flood us with impressions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"505\" data-end=\"710\">Clinical psychologist and author Dr Emma Hepburn points to studies showing that people who get their information from traditional media find it less emotionally overwhelming than content from social media.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"1032\">That makes sense: a newspaper or news broadcast has a clear end; each story is time-limited. Also, our brain isn\u2019t bombarded with as many images. Of course, traditional media aren\u2019t entirely neutral either, but they generally aim to report based on facts \u2013 with less emotional charge (even though there are exceptions).<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4189\" data-end=\"4240\"><span style=\"color: #086a87;\">What Helps?
